Palermo City Council OKs Civil Unions

In bold move, though a long time in the works, the City Council of Palermo yesterday approved a Registry for Civil Unions, making it the fourth city after Milan, Turin, and Naples to adopt such measures.

This resolution will now allow all registering couples the same administrative benefits afforded to married couples. This act will eliminate any form of discrimination towards those united in a civil union, putting Palermo on a par with other European cities in matters of civil rights.

Italian and foreign citizens alike cohabitating and residing in the city of Palermo are eligible to register. Benefits are extended to couples even in the event of death one of the partners.

Palermo, famous for being an open and welcoming city, is now also a city that protects and promotes the rights of everyone, as foreseen by the Italian Constitution.
